In its most basic form, the internal combustion engine is nothing more than an air pump. Hence, to develop more power, an engine needs to pump in, and also pump out, more air & fuel. On a normally aspirated engine, an increase of intake air flow is achieved by running different air intake systems and CAMs. Air intake changes are not limited to air filters and air intakes, but also include differently shaped intake manifolds as well as cylinder head intake porting. Different CAM profiles vary how far and how long intake valves stay open for that gulp of air & fuel.

Custom, Schneller True RAM Air Intake System S52 Engine
Internally, engine power can be increased further by elevating compression ratios and/or increasing engine displacement as well. This is typically achieved by developing custom pistons & replacing crankshafts & connecting rods. Because of its labor intensity, internal engine changes are typically quite costly, but if done properly will deliver noticeable performance gains.
